“Are you a paparazzi?”
”Um … No”
(I had just taken a photo
of this lamp you see here)
”Oh well he is on
(name a show you’ve never heard of)
and we thought you might be one.”
”Sorry, no, I’m not a paparazzi.
I’m an artist.”
Only in LA can you have a
conversation like that.
I love the challenge of night photography.
Working with film attention night without the aid of flash or staged lighting is perhaps one of the more difficult forms of photography. The darker it is, the longer the shutter must remain open to capture the image. Once you are working with 1/60th of a second or slower, you increase the risk for blurred images.
Sometimes blurry works in your favor creatively but most of the time it is something we avoid. To do that I use very light sensitive film. I use 3200 speed black and white film and sometimes I will shoot it at 6400 speed and then push the development one stop. It works well. Thankfully cell phone and digital cameras are getting so good in low light conditions but if you want the romance of film, you need to really concentrate and have a steady hand.
